4 Acoustical Myths Debunked

4acousticalmyths

Part of our job here at Memtech Acoustical is to not only provide solutions for people’s acoustical needs, but to also explain why these solutions are necessary.

By explaining “what” we do and answering the “why” we do it, we are able to provide our customers with a greater knowledge and understanding to our work, as well as deliver exceptional service.

 Acoustical Myth #1:

“If I cover most of my machine with barrier, it will become very quiet.”

  • Products are designed to be completely enclosed in order to reduce the noise. The noise reduction all depends on the mass of the barrier, so just putting up a wall will not work. If you were to only put up a barrier, noise could go up and over easily. External factors, such as wind, would also add to the noise being produced (wind can drive noise downward, creating an echo). Thus, you have to cover the entire machine in order to quiet it down a significant level.

Acoustical Myth #2

“I can use any kind of foam wrap to quiet it down completely.”

  • What most people don’t know is that only acoustical foam absorbs noise, and with that you can only quiet it down so much (around 10 dB). Barriers are better; they block the noise more effectively.

Acoustical Myth #3

“If I reduce the noise by 3 dBA, it will make a huge improvement in the overall noise.”

  • Though a reduction of 3 dB may seem like a lot, it is actually the very minimum noticeable difference by someone with good hearing. This reduction doesn’t make a huge improvement, the noise must decrease by 10 dB (which cuts it in half) in order to be substantial.

Acoustical Myth #4

“The steel enclosure panels will block enough of the noise.”

  • Noise doesn’t travel in a direct path, so any openings in an enclosure will result in noise reflection off of the floors or ceilings. The design of an enclosure is important because you need to be sure you are taking in all factors both internal and external that may affect the noise. Then keeping all of these factors in mind, determine what solution will work best.

At Memtech Acoustical we know noise; we can quickly measure, analyze, and quantify your noise concerns as well as provide solutions to these noise problems that will fit into your budget.

We can custom fabricate almost any kind of noise control structure, resulting in no restrictions on the products we select to complete the job. We are prepared to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
