Reducing Restaurant Noise

Restaurant Noise

Have you ever been to a restaurant where the atmosphere is great, the décor is inviting, and the food smells delectable?

However, have you in turn ever been to a restaurant that had great potential, but the fact that you can’t hear what the person 2 ft. away from you was saying, turned a possibly good experience into a bad one?

The reason for this problem lies in the restaurant’s acoustics. A study found that the average noise level in restaurants measured about 70 decibels and the volume needed for comfortable conversation is around 60 decibels.

Several variables can affect restaurant acoustics such as special arrangement, shape of the walls and ceiling, hard surfaces, tables too close, lack of padding on the walls, etc. There are many noise factors that contribute to the acoustical problems present in restaurants.

First let’s look at the kitchen. Many times in modern restaurants, kitchens are built to showcase openness and visibility of the chefs, equipment, etc. Though this attribute is visually appealing, it is not always audibly appealing.

All kinds of loud noises originate in the kitchen ranging from dishes clanging and breaking to kitchen employee conversations, thus creating more noise in the restaurant as a whole.

In turn, when the noise coming from the kitchen is loud, people may need to speak louder in order to be heard, again raising the noise level further.

This essentially creates a “domino effect” where people are trying to talk over one another as well as the outside sounds created among the restaurant, which subsequently can result in a very noisy and undesirable environment.

The kitchen isn’t the only noise source that can create problems; components such as music and exterior traffic play big roles in restaurant noise levels as well.

The good news is; there is a solution to these acoustical problems, and we can help.
