What is Noise Control and Why Do We Need It?

Noise facts

Noise control fact: Did you know that in the United States, approximately 22 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise on a daily basis?

Or that research has shown that exposure to constant or high levels of noise can cause countless adverse health effects? These health effects include but are not limited to- stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss, sleep disruption, lost productivity, and even NIHL (noise induced hearing loss).

The only way to fix these problems and assure our well-being is to control these noises. Keeping these noises at a safe level is detrimental to the health and safety of not only workers, but everyone else who may encounter such noise as well.

Be it indoors, outdoors, in a car, at home, at work, reducing the impacts of these unwanted sounds using unique strategies is what noise control entails.

Generally speaking, the preferred approach to rid these dangerous noises would be to eliminate them all together, however, in many cases this is simply not an option.

That’s where noise control comes into play, by not eradicating the noise entirely, but bringing it down to a reasonable level where it no longer possesses harm. The first step in noise control is to identify the noise sources and their relative importance, then create a plan of action regarding how to resolve the issue(s) and create a safer more productive atmosphere.

There are two types of noise control, active and passive which are commonly used for personal comfort, environmental considerations, or legal compliance. Active noise control uses a power source in order to reduce sound and is best suited for low frequencies.

Passive noise control is using noise-isolating materials like insulation and sound-absorbing materials to reduce sound and are more effective at higher frequencies.

Noisy spaces that possess a loud enough decibel level to cause harm need to be addressed immediately in order to prevent further damage. By continuing to ignore these noise problems, we are potentially putting ourselves and others at risks for various health related issues caused by these noises.

There is always a better solution to these noise problems than “just dealing with them”, and we can help. At Memtech Acoustical we know noise; we can quickly measure, analyze, and quantify your noise concerns as well as provide solutions to these noise problems that will fit into your budget.
