The Problem With Construction Noise
Though construction noise is temporary, it seems to be found practically everywhere. It feels like there is always a plaza to be built, a road to be fixed, or an apartment complex to be assembled.
Construction is both something we can see and definitely something we can hear. Imagine being front and center to that noise for your 8 hour work day shift, all day, every day. You might be surprised what something like this could do to your hearing.
It is potentially more damage than you’d think. Exposure to a loud and powerful sounds has the ability to damage your hearing instantly, and prolonged exposure to loud noises could possibly lead to a gradual, permanent loss of hearing.
In a construction work site, there are all types of sources unveiling diverse noises, whether it’s the tools, machinery, or the workers themselves.
Exposure to high levels of construction noise have the ability to cause permanent hearing loss that cannot be fixed with a hearing aid or surgery. To put just how loud some of these noises are into perspective, let’s start off by explaining that the human voice exerts 60-70 dB, and anything about 85 dB can cause damage.
In fact, OSHA recommends that “Workplace noise levels be kept below 85 dB as an 8-hour time weighted average.” Commonly used tools in construction such as a jackhammer or a bulldozer operate at a much higher decibel.
Jackhammers have a 102 dB, while bulldozers have a 100 dB, therefore prolonged exposure to either (or both in many cases), can result in hearing loss or impairment.
Loud noises such as these in the construction workplace also have the ability to reduce work productivity, as well as play a role in accidents in the workplace, given that workers are at times unable to hear warning signals.
