What is Noise?

learning about noise

Noise, we hear it all day long. It’s everywhere we go, in our cars, in our homes, at the office, you name it. If you think that noise is each and every sound you hear during your daily routines, you’re mistaken.

Noise is in fact defined as an unwanted sound, like nails on a chalk board or a jackhammer pounding through concrete at 6 a.m. When determining whether or not a noise is hazardous, both duration of exposure and intensity of the noise are taken into account.

There are two factors of noise, the first is frequency. The higher the frequency of a noise, the more high pitched a sound is perceived. Since sound is the quickly varying pressure wave travelling through a medium, there is what’s called frequency of sound, or the number of pressure variations per second and is measured in Hertz (Hz).

The second factor of noise is loudness, which is measured in Decibel (dB).  Loud noises such as an explosion posses a large pressure variation, where as weak ones like a clock ticking exhibit a smaller pressure variation.

Occasionally when dealing with noise, a sound is reflected off of a hard surface such as a wall or a window, back to the listener, this is referred to as an echo. An echo is a reflection of sound that arrives at the listener sometime after the direct sound.

When a number of reflections arrive at a listener and they are not able to differentiate between them, this is called reverberation. As the sound is absorbed by objects, the reflections build up and decline.
