Acoustics In The Office

When working in an office, employees are faced with all different types of office noise on a day to day basis. Sounds that range from the whistling of the air conditioner to the chatter taking place in the next cubicle.

All of these sounds and many more are a seemingly normal part of the office; however, sometimes these sounds can create issues in the work environment.

In any office environment, when the sound level increases by 10 dB, the sound energy multiplies by 10.  A study found that typical office noises including speech caused a modest physiological stress increase and diminished motivation in the office.

There are three separate classes of effects of sound on the human being, the first being physical, which is of no concern in the office setting.

The second is physiological, though in the office it can be minor; there is no concern for this type of effect either. The last is psychological, where one can experience mental changes due to exposure to noise. These effects are manifested by annoyance and can occur at any sound level.

When dealing with psychological effects, the response of a person is totally subjective. One person’s evaluation of the necessity of the noise and whether it can be controlled may be totally different than someone else’s.

There is a spectrum of needs for employees in an office with three points taken into account. The first is communication, ideas needs to be communicated and conversations need to be had, thus offices should not inhibit speech where it’s necessary, but take into account places where it should be kept to a minimum.

Privacy is another need to keep in mind in an office, there needs to be confidentiality to protect conversations that are considered private.

Community is a final need that an office should possess, though people may desire privacy, most do not want isolation. Employees want to feel part of their organization and reasonable sound levels keeps employees in touch in the office.

The transient noise in an office like conversation and interior machine sounds and exterior sounds such as traffic and lawn mowing, as well as the steady noises like air conditioners and light fixtures need to be reduced in order to improve overall office acoustics.
