Customer Background Noise Prevention

Memtech Acoustical designs, supplies, and installs well-engineered soundproofing solutions for excessive noise and reverberation.

Restaurant and Bar Soundproofing

Memtech Acoustical can transform your restaurant into a quieter, more pleasant dinning experience for your customers.

Many restaurants and bars experience excessive noise during busy times, requiring patrons to raise their voices to talk, and this can result in an uncomfortable dining experience. This noise will often result in a ‘background din’ that can disrupt the desired atmosphere, and create communication issues between customers and waiters.

In most cases, this ‘annoyance’ noise is caused by excessive reverberation (“echo”) in the room, which is due to the presence of hard walls, floors and ceilings. These surfaces act as excellent sound reflectors, and thus noise is subjectively amplified throughout the restaurant. Reducing reverberation requires the careful application of noise-absorbing materials at strategic locations throughout the room. A variety of highly effective products are available for this purpose, and can be designed and installed so as to blend-in with the aesthetics of virtually any restaurant. Fabric panels, colorful and shaped acoustic ‘clouds’ and other products are very effective at minimizing sound reflections. Should some amount of reverberation be desired to create a ‘lively’ room effect (without excessive echo), these products can be spaced and located such that the room may be ‘tuned’ to achieve the desired effect.

In other cases, certain rooms may seem acoustically ‘dead’, which can result in an unpleasant effect which imparts a lack of liveliness or feelings of uneasiness to customers. This problem can be corrected via the installation of sound reflection or diffusion panels.
In some situations, acoustic isolation may be required between adjoining dining & banquet rooms or from outdoor locations, such that loud conversation or background traffic noise does not negatively impact noise levels. This requires the installation of noise-blocking materials, which can often be installed without changing the room’s appearance or design.

In venues, where music may be playing, high levels of reverberation may cause ‘muddling’ of voices or instruments. MEMTECH ACOUSTICAL can also assist with the proper selection and installation of public address and music playback systems, including optimum microphone and speaker placements for small musician platforms that are often located in bar areas. Other issues, such as room resonances (often causing a ‘booming’ effect during low bass tones) can be reduced via baffling, bass traps, and/or minor modifications to the room. MEMTECH ACOUSTICAL has worked with many restaurants and bars to resolve difficult noise and reverberation concerns.

The use of acoustic ceiling panels will reduce reflected noise and reduce the overall ‘din’ in a restaurant, allowing improved speech intelligibility and providing a better customer experience. Patrons will no longer have to yell in order to be heard. A wide variety of panel designs and colors are available. These panels can also be placed on walls and other hard reflective surfaces.

Whisperwave Acoustic Baffles can be used on ceilings and other hard surfaces, providing a ‘textured’ look to break-up the monotony of large flat spaces, while providing superior absorption of acoustic energy. These panels will significantly reduce excessive reverberation, which can muddle speech and increase the overall levels of noise in a restaurant. In addition, the textured design is intended to diffuse sound waves, which serves to ‘break-up’ undesirable reflected noise.

In restaurants with elaborate room designs or with high ceilings, the use of acoustic panels becomes essential in controlling reverberation. The pyramid ceiling design in the example shown above provides a great open appearance, but also allows for multiple sound reflection paths to be present, which can cause a ‘jumbling’ effect in overall noise, and create severe difficulties with conversations. Acoustic panels attached to these surfaces will absorb much of the sound, resulting in a more desirable customer experience.

Even in restaurants with an ‘open ceiling’ architecture, acoustic panels can be used directly on the decking surfaces to reduce reverberation. In situations where noise is emanating from adjoining rooms, outdoor sources, or from neighboring businesses on floors above the restaurant, MEMTECH ACOUSTICAL can provide materials which block noise from external sources, while minimizing reverberation from within.
